Lately, I’ve been captivated by the TV show Vikings. It’s on the History Channel and as historically accurate as these things can be. As true with many period pieces, there is a strong overtone of patriarchy. Much to my surprise, however, there is also a strong matriarchy at times. The women that play main characters are particularly strong, even more so than some of the men. Being a world filled with amazons and shield-maidens, this should not have come as a surprise. It’s the dichotomy of the roles of women that I found most interesting. Women are either subservient—as spouses or slaves—or they’re warriors and rulers. The usefulness of women as either warriors or mothers (or both) is also felt by the certain lack of any old women in the show. In fact the only old women you see are always extras as slaves or villagers. It lends to the idea that sex was used to gain control and power over others in these days. As a woman, if you’d lost your ability to seduce or fight, you were reduced to nothing.
